The Shape of Desire?

A gap into the unknown opens, and the desire to know—curiosity—seeps in like mist. The deeper the question is pursued, the more boundaries dissolve, and the sharper the senses become. As hidden orders are uncovered and connections form, the unknown grows clearer—and because there is no end in sight, we are drawn in even further. Accumulated concepts settle as frameworks of thought, fragmented information converges into understanding, and accumulated knowledge becomes conviction—holding us steady.

In a capitalist market, trust grounded in knowledge is among the most valuable assets. The desires I’ve mapped out all contain elements of ‘uncertainty’—but knowledge transforms that unpredictability into a state of high predictability. This very principle underpins not only education, but even the industries that buy and sell academic degrees. The curve of intellectual desire has a flow of curiosity → inquiry and immersion → understanding and expansion. With each stage, knowledge accumulates gently, like water seeping in—rising slowly rather than sharply. But if it goes up with a sudden click, it locks into place and interlocks like puzzle pieces, and the horizon of thought expands. These small realizations periodically stack into steps, forming a rhythm that carries us forward. By the time we reach E(1)—a certain age—this desire gradually wanes, as the brain begins to rely on previously acquired knowledge to operate more efficiently (downward). Or, the brain longs for increasingly more knowledge (upward). This desire shares a similar nature with the element of ‘water’ and ‘wood’, so the color of this element would be applied through a subjective lens.

미지의 틈이 열리고, 알고 싶다는 갈망과 호기심이 안개처럼 그 안으로 스며든다. 질문을 파고들수록 경계는 사라지고, 감각은 예리해진다. 숨겨진 질서를 찾아 연결하며 미지의 세계가 또렷해지고, 끝이 보이지 않기에 더 깊이 빠져든다. 쌓인 개념들이 사고의 틀이 되어 자리를 잡고, 조각난 정보는 이해로 이어지며, 축적된 앎은 확신이 되어 나를 지탱한다.

자본주의 시장에서 앎에서 오는 신뢰는 무엇보다 소중한 자산이다. 내가 정리한 욕망들 역시 모두 ‘불확정성’을 품고 있지만, 지식은 그 불예측성을 ‘높은 예측 가능성’으로 바꿔 준다. 현장 그리고 실제 공부와, 더 나아가 학위를 사고파는 산업까지 해당 원리와 연관되어 움직인다.

지식욕의 곡선은 호기심 → 탐구·몰입 → 이해·확장으로 이어진다. 단계마다 물이 스미듯 차곡차곡 쌓이지만, 급격한 상승 대신 속도가 느린 상승이 된다. 그러나 한 번 ‘툭’ 하고 오르면 단단히 고정돼 퍼즐 조각처럼 이해가 맞물리고, 사고의 지평이 넓어진다. 이렇게 작은 깨달음이 주기적으로 계단을 이루며, 다음 단계로 이어지는 리듬을 만들어 낸다. 어느덧 E(1)나이가 되면 해당 욕망은 서서히 낮아지는데 기존까지 습득했던 배경지식을 통해 뇌는 앎을 효율적으로 탐색하고자 할 것이다.(하향) 혹은 더욱 많은 앎을 갈망할 것이다.(상향)
