The Shape of Desire?

When external energy seeps past the skin and deep into the cells, dormant senses awaken with delicate clarity. Sense of touch sharpens, sensations deepen, and instinct stirs beneath the name of life—as the cells begin to open. Boundaries between senses begin to dissolve, spreading into a single, unified surge of perception. Letting the body yield to the flow, the senses converge, and fullness erupts into a moment of intensity—leaving behind a lingering warmth like afterglow.

Hearing, smell, sight, taste, touch… this is a desire that the momentary reactivity and repetitive attractiveness of the living senses are never fulfilled. Originally brief and fleeting, these waves once quietly bloomed only within the rhythms of nature—the scent of the seasons, the texture of bark, the sound of wind. But modern capitalism has transformed these senses into manipulable triggers of desire—endlessly commodifying, stimulating, and addicting. In society, the accumulation of sensory knowledge forms the basis of culture. And this, in turn, marks how much closer art and the public have come than ever before. When sensory stimulation occurs, desire spikes sharply (E1), then gradually diminishes over time. But with repeated stimulation, sensory desire rises again (E2) and lingers—tracing a path much like memory. Could it be that all artistic acts are, in some way, extensions of sensory addiction? If the overall slope of the graph rises too steeply, it may lead to a dependency akin to addiction. But if the curve remains gentle, perhaps we can harness our senses with balance, developing them into creative abilities instead. This desire shares a similar nature with the element of ‘water’ and 'fire', so the color of this element would be applied through a subjective lens.

외부의 기운이 피부를 넘어 세포 깊숙이 스며들 때, 잠든 감각이 섬세하게 깨어난다. 촉각이 선명해지고, 느낌은 점점 짙어지며, 생명의 명분 아래 본능이 깨어나며, 세포가 모두 열린다. 감각들의 경계가 녹아 한 덩어리의 총체적 감응으로 번진다. 흐름에 몸을 맡긴 채 감각이 합쳐지며, 충만한 순간이 폭발하듯 번지고 여운은 잔열처럼 남는다.

청각/후각/시각/미각/촉각 등… 생명체로서 살아있는 감각들의 순간적 반응성과 반복적 유인성이 끊임없이 채워지지 않는 욕망이다. 원래 짧고 순간적인 파동인데, 예전에는 계절의 냄새, 나무 껍질의 감촉, 바람 소리 같은 자연의 흐름 속에서만 작게 피어났다. 하지만 현대 자본주의는 이 감각을 조작 가능한 욕망의 자극장치로 만들어 끝없이 상품화하고, 반복 자극하고, 중독시키는 체계로 발전시켰다. 사회에서 사람들의 감각적 지식이 쌓이고 모여 문화가 형성된다. 그것은 예술과 대중이 이전보다 더욱 가까워졌다는 지표이기도 하다.

감각 자극이 발생(E1)하면 순간 욕망이 급격히 증가하고, 시간이 지나면 감쇠되며 서서히 줄어들지만, 자극이 반복되면 감각욕망이 다시 상승(E2)하며, 일정 수준에서 기억의 궤적처럼 지속된다. 해당 감각이 점점 발달하는 것이다. 어쩌면 모든 예술적 행위는 일종의 감각중독에서 발전된 것일까? 그래프의 전반적인 기울기가 급 성장할수록 마약같은 의존성 중독으로 이어질 것이고, 완만할수록 우리의 감각을 적절히 사용하면서 능력으로 개발시킬 수도 있을 것이다.

본 욕망은 오행 중 ‘수’,’화’의 성질과 유사하여, 본 성질의 색감을 참고하여 주관적으로 적용될 것이다.
